As the 2024-25 school year comes to an end, we honor the senior athletes who have graduated from WSU and are leaving Pullman for bigger and better things. This is the 2024-25 Daily Evergreen senior athlete farewell series.
Mason Mahacek only spent one year at WSU, but he made a lasting impact on the record books.
Before coming to WSU, Mahacek spent four years at the University of Michigan.
As a freshman, he finished seventh in the heptathlon at the Big 10 Championships and set a Michigan freshman record.
The next year, he improved to fifth in the Big 10 Championships, scoring a personal best 5,343 points in the heptathlon event. He also finished eighth that year in the Big 10 in the decathlon event, also scoring a personal best 7,388 points.
As a junior, he finished sixth place in both the heptathlon and decathlon in the Big 10 Championships, and improved his heptathlon personal best to 5,423.
Coming to WSU, Mahacek again set a new personal best in the heptathlon, scoring 5,762 points. He set the new WSU indoor heptathlon record with that mark, which he scored in the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. He qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and was an All-American.
Though he was only at WSU for one year, his impact on the record books is secure.
