Truck carrying explosives crashes outside of Potlatch

IAN SMAY, Evergreen reporter

A semi-truck carrying explosives crashed in Potlatch early Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred at about 2 a.m. and forced evacuations at the Y Mobile Home Park in Potlatch. The truck tipped onto its side after running off the curb, Idaho State Police Captain Lonnie Richardson said.

The driver, 38-year-old David Sturgill, was cited for his role in the accident. Richardson said the cause of the accident was driver inattention. Sturgill was injured in the crash.

While truck crashes are common in the area, he said that he cannot remember any previous instances of truck crashes involving explosive cargo.

The name of the trucking company and the type of explosives are not available at this time. Richardson said the investigation should be done within a week.
