Conservative influencer Charlie Kirk was fatally shot Wednesday during a speech at the Utah Valley University campus in Orem, Utah.
Video circulating the internet appears to show the moment Kirk was hit in the neck. Other videos show people running in the opposite direction moments after a shot could be heard.
Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, a conservative nonprofit Kirk founded, confirmed Kirk was rushed away by his private security after being shot.
The shot, which was fired approximately 20 minutes after Kirk began speaking, came from more than 100 yards away, said Ellen Treanor, a Utah Valley University spokesperson.
A suspect was initially taken into custody, though authorities determined the man seen being detained in a video posted to social media is not the gunman. The UVU campus has been closed and classes have been canceled until Sept. 15 as authorities continue to investigate the shooting.
On Sept. 12, Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced authorities have arrested Tyler Robinson, a student in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College. Robinson, who is not cooperating with authorities, is being held without bail.
Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, spoke outside Murrow hall on the Terrell Mall in April during a scheduled appearance. His visit came just after WSU made national headlines for an incident involving a WSU instructor and a student.
During Kirk’s appearance at WSU, he spoke about the incident involving Patrick Mahoney, a graduate student and former instructor with the school of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs, who was fired after he attacked a student wearing a pro-Trump hat.
Kirk founded TPUSA in 2012 when he was 18. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
