It’s getting hot Upton here for the M’s

The Major League Baseball Hot Stove League is cooking up a heck of a dish for the Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves that would even make legendary chef Gordon Ramsay bow down in amazement.

There have been several moves in recent weeks for many teams, but the moves made by both the Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves seem to be a sign for bigger things to come in the near future.

In the past few days, the Seattle Mariners signed power hitting outfielder Nelson Cruz to a four-year deal worth $58 million and have traded away outfielder Michael Saunders to the Toronto Blue Jays for pitcher J.A. Happ.

The Braves also signed a big name player in the form of outfielder Nick Markakis.

These moves have given some life to the rumors of the Braves trading outfielder Justin Upton or catcher/outfielder Evan Gattis to the Mariners.

Most of the rumors from the Hot Stove League involve the Seattle Mariners trading away a pitching prospect and possibly another piece to the Braves’ for Justin Upton. With the recent moves made, this rumor is starting to look more and more like it could become reality.

Depending on who the Mariners have to give up, this trade could really help or hurt the M’s. The three main players in question that Seattle would trade away are starting pitchers Taijuan Walker, James Paxton and Hisashi Iwakuma.

The only player that makes sense is Walker. Iwakuma is a cornerstone of the Mariner’s pitching staff and one of the main reasons why they have one of the most dominant rotations in baseball. Getting rid of a solid No. 2 starter would make the rotation fall apart.

Paxton has shown that he has a tremendous amount of potential and is starting to show signs of unleashing it within the next two years. Although Walker is still basically a rookie, his upside is not as high as Paxton’s, which makes him the most likely of the three to be traded.

The only problem with trading for Upton is the remainder of his contract. He only has one year left on his deal which means he would be gone at the end of the 2015 season unless he is re-signed. If the Mariners get Upton, they would need to make sure they could sign an extension with him or else they would have given up a promising young pitcher for one chance at the playoffs. If they cannot guarantee an extension with Upton after trading for him, the trade would end up hurting the Mariners more than helping.

The trade possibility has a lot of upside for the M’s, as they would get a proven commodity in Justin Upton in a position they have had problems with for years. The deal for Upton makes sense for the Mariners only if they can cover all of their bases.
