Alpha Kappa Lambda was put on temporary suspension Tuesday evening by the Interfraternity Council.

The suspension came after AKL was suspended by both WSU and the organization’s headquarters, according to a news release and confirmed by Mitchell Weholt, IFC’s Director of Public Relations.

The IFC Council made the decision to temporarily suspend the chapter after it received a complaint against them on Oct. 18. Once the university and AKL’s headquarters decided to suspend and investigate the house, the council followed suit, Weholt said.

Six days after the council issued their suspension, the IFC Senate confirmed the move. This occurred one day before the seven-day deadline written in their bylaws, Weholt said.

Weholt said that the IFC could not comment as to the nature or content of the complaint that led to the suspension. A decision on the future of the chapter at WSU will come down to the findings made by the university’s and the investigation by the chapter’s headquarters.

“Any conduct case through the university, depending on the case itself, can take a varying amount of time,” Weholt said.

During the temporary suspension, AKL’s ability to operate is limited.

“A suspension basically means a temporary unrecognition,” Weholt said. “They cannot carryout normal functions. They can still meet and be an organization, but they are not a member of the IFC during the suspension.”

Maxwell Zimmerman, president of the AKL chapter at WSU, declined to comment on the suspension.
