Opinion section dedicated to diversity, experience

New editor’s goals, attitude will strengthen voice of opinion section, renewed focus

JACKSON FERDERER, Evergreen opinion editor

Each semester, every section of The Daily Evergreen finds itself with a new editor and new writers. For the spring 2018 semester, I’ll be in charge, and I have big ideas.

My first priority this semester is to showcase voices from outside the status quo. I want to hear from the communities on campus that don’t often have a place to speak up. I’ve committed to hiring a diverse staff, not only in their backgrounds but also their ideas.

Secondly, I’m uninterested in lukewarm think pieces. I don’t want to publish columns that offer a muted response to the events happening in our community. I want passionate ideas to flourish, and I will push my writers to create interesting and spirited content for you, the reader.

Although I have faith in my staff, I know that five or six columnists cannot cover the diverse student body here at WSU. That’s why I’m equally passionate about hearing from you.

Send me your letters. Contact me about writing guest columns. Demand more from me and I will listen.

I want to hear from you if you hated one of our columns just as much as if you loved one. The more you comment on The Daily Evergreen’s Facebook page, the more chance you have of appearing in reader reactions.

My contact information is right below this. Let me know what you think.
