The Washington State University women’s cross country team took home the winning title at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals Invitational on Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Cougars’ standout senior Abby Regan finished second in the women’s race, completing the 6-kilometer course in 21:31.3. The next Coug to cross the line was redshirt senior Ruby Roberts in 21st (22:12.4).

The Cougar women’s team won the 33-team meet with 143 points. The Cougars were the only Pac-12 school competing in the women’s race. Southern Illinois placed second with 182 points.

“The women’s team ran really well,” Head Coach Wayne Phipps said in an interview with wsucougars.com. “It was great to win and have Ruby (Roberts) running with us again.”

On the men’s side, redshirt senior Drew Jordan was the top finisher for the Cougs and placed 58th overall in the 8-kilometer race (25:11.0). As a team, the men came in 17th against the 46-team field.

Pac-12 rivals Colorado and Oregon placed first (35 points) and second (91 points), respectively.

“It was a tough day for the guys,” Phipps said.

Phipps also noted that despite not accomplishing the goals set for the men, he has confidence in his team moving forward.

The cross country team next takes to the course on Oct. 31 in Oakland for the Pac-12 Championships.
