Digging for an upset; Cougar volleyball plays two ranked teams

From staff reports

Homecoming week means two competitive matches for Cougar volleyball.

The Cougs (9-5, 0-2) will face No. 19 USC (7-6, 0-3) and No. 20 UCLA (10-3, 1-1) in Pullman this weekend.

The Cougars will fight for a home win against the Trojans for the second straight season at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by UCLA at 11 a.m. Sunday, both in Bohler Gym.

WSU is coming off of two losses on the road against No. 4 Washington and No. 1 Stanford. Head Coach Jen Greeny said she’s glad to back on their home court.

“I think any time teams have to come to Pullman it’s another advantage for us,” Greeny said. “Being in Bohler Gym, where we can get the students and community members out, (we’re able to) get it loud in there and really get that home court advantage.”

Senior captain and outside hitter Jaicee Harris reached 1,000 career digs and 1,000 career kills in last week’s match against Stanford. She is only the fourth player in WSU volleyball history to tally those numbers.

“We’ve definitely grown a lot and really absorbed what the coaches are asking of us,” Harris said. “We need to come ready to battle and ready to fight.”

Greeny said she was impressed with the Cougars’ defensive play last week. Junior libero Kate Sommer said the key to prevailing against the Trojans this weekend is to be “fearless.” Sommer said if the Cougars believe in themselves, the wins will follow.

Greeny said she doesn’t think the Trojans have forgotten last season’s match in Bohler.

“I think it’s a good thing to have USC coming in this early in the season,” she said. “(Last year’s win) is still in our memory, and I know it’s in their memory as well.”

The matches against USC and UCLA will be available on the Pac-12 Networks. Live stats can be found at wsucougars.com.
