Rocky Horror on the Palouse

From staff reports

The Rocky Horror Picture Show will bring celebration, anticipation, and participation to the Palouse with a weekend showing at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Center in Moscow.

Let’s do the Time Warp again.

Sirius Entertainment will host its 10th annual, interactive showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at 7 p.m., 9 p.m., and midnight Friday and Saturday.

“Virgin— In the common world, this usually refers to a person who has not engaged in sexual relations,” Sirius impresario Jerry Schutz said. “In the Rocky Horror world, this word refers to the many unfortunate people who have never experience The Rocky Horror Picture Show in a theater with an audience and a live cast.”

Watching it on video, DVD, or TV doesn’t count, she said.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a science fiction and horror film parody that follows the misadventures of newly engaged couple, Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, as they are caught in a storm and stumble upon the residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite with a creation calling for celebration.

Rocky Horror is an audience participation movie, the first and only, in which viewers yell back lines at the screen, dress up in costume, act out the film, and throw props during specified moments in the film, Schutz said.

“On average we see 200 people here for the weekend. I’d expect that, if not more,” said Christine Gilmore, executive director of the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre.

Outside props are not allowed. However, prop kits are available upon admission and include various items such as rice, a party hat and noisemaker, a rubber glove, and toast.

“It has been absolutely phenomenal that we can show this film and have the participation in such a wonderful space as the Kenworthy,” Schutz said. “We are very excited to be able to keep this cult classic going on the Palouse.

Tickets cost $12 and include admission and a prop kit. Tickets, as well as more information, are available at www.siriusentertainment.org, or at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre box office the night of the show.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is rated R and identification may be required.
