Seahawks will benefit from trading Percy Harvin to Jets

While Seahawks Wide Receiver Percy Harvin will be running the Jet Sweep play with the New York Jets, the loss of the explosive receiver does not spell doom for the Seahawks. It actually opens up many different options for the Seahawks down the road.

On Friday, Oct. 17, the Seahawks confirmed they had traded Percy Harvin to New York while the Seahawks receive a conditional pick in the 2015 draft. This will either be a fourth-round pick or a sixth-round pick depending on some different factors.

While the initial news stunned most of the Seahawks and fans, looking at it further, this trade may have helped the team in several different areas.

The most obvious benefit of losing Harvin gives the Seahawks the help with the salary cap. Harvin came to Seattle with a cap hit of $12.9 million, according to ESPN.com. This is a significant amount of money to free up on the Seahawks’ roster. With the Seahawks looking to extend Russell Wilson’s contract during the next off-season, this new cap room will help the team lock up their franchise quarterback for a long-term deal.

One of the biggest problems with Harvin in Seattle was his attitude with the team off the field. According to several sources, he was involved in a fight with former Seahawk Golden Tate during Super Bowl Week and also had a fight with Doug Baldwin during the preseason. Getting rid of Harvin helps the locker room chemistry in Seattle.

With Harvin off the roster, the Seahawks can also use their existing pieces more extensively. One of the problems the Seahawks have had in recent weeks is their lack of handing the ball to running back Marshawn Lynch. Lynch is one of the league’s most productive running backs. He is tied for fifth in the NFL in rushing touchdowns with three and is tied for second among running backs in receiving touchdowns with three, according to ESPN.com. In games where he has had less than 20 carries this season, the Seahawks have a record of 1-3, according to ESPN.com.

The receivers will also get more work. In the most recent game where the Seahawks lost to the St. Louis Rams on Oct. 19, Doug Baldwin recorded 123 yards on seven receptions and a touchdown, according to ESPN.com. This season Harvin has not gotten more than 56 yards in any one game. Baldwin has proved that he can be a solid receiver in the NFL and he will get more numbers with Harvin not playing.

While losing Harvin does mean the Seahawks have lost a very powerful offensive weapon, his absence from the team will help out others on the team in a multitude of ways. Overall, the Seahawks are better without Harvin and his Jet Sweeps. He is the Jets’ problem now.
