Golf tees it up at Bill Cullum Invitational

From staff reports

For the third time this year, the Washington State Cougar men’s golf team will take their talents to California — this time to participate in the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley.

The tournament will consist of 54 holes played at the par-72, 6,819-yard Wood Ranch Golf Club. Action starts Monday at 7:45 a.m. with the first 36 holes of the tournament. Cal State Northridge is the host school of the 21-team event that features WSU and fellow Pac-12 schools Arizona State and University of Southern California.

The five Cougars competing at the event will be seniors Michael Anderson, Sang Lee, and Charlie Mroz, junior Evan Omelia, and freshman Derek Bayley. After an 11th place finish last week at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, California, Head Coach Garrett Clegg said it will be great to get right back into another tournament.

“We didn’t have a great tournament last week, and we’re hoping to bounce back this week,” Clegg said. “We’re looking for consistency and hopefully with a more experienced group traveling this weekend we can put together a strong performance.”

In 2012, the Cougars participated in the Bill Cullum Invitational and finished third. Lee and Anderson competed in that tournament and finished fourth and 19th, respectively. Redshirt senior Alex Wagner competed as well and finished 29th, but he is not making the trip to Simi Valley this week.

Live stats will be available at golfstat.com. Tournament results will be posted at wsucougars.com at the end of each day of competition.
