Expressing herself; Shalie tells her story

The first thing you notice about Shalie Dheensaw is her towering height of 6 feet 3 inches which sets her apart in a crowd. But the more exciting numbers pertaining to Dheensaw are her numbers on the court. Last year she started all 34 games and averaged 7.3 points per game and a team best 6.6 rebounds per game. Of course, there is more to Dheensaw than her basketball career. To find out more about what Dheensaw is like off the court, The Daily Evergreen sat down with her to talk about everything but basketball stats.

Daily Evergreen: What is one thing on your bucket list that you haven’t done yet?

Shalie Dheensaw: I want to go to Bora Bora. I have to do that. It’s really expensive but I really want to go just to relax.

DE: What is one of your hidden talents?

SD: I would say people are really surprised that I’m a fast swimmer. I’m not NCAA fast but considering I don’t train or anything, I’m definitely the fastest one on the team. I love swimming, I totally would have done it here if I could.

DE: What is your favorite movie and why?

SD: One of my favorite movies would be “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and another would be “The Breakfast Club.” I just love old movies.

DE: Do you have a celebrity crush and if so who is it?

SD: Beyoncé. I’m so obsessed with Beyoncé and Luke Bryan. Those are my two need-to-see people.

DE: If you were on an island, assuming you have food and shelter, what three things would you want with you?

SD: My cellphone. I feel like my phone basically covers everything that I would need so just my phone.

DE: Can you recall a funny moment you have had with the team?

SD: I think that every memory with my team is funny. But I think before our games in the locker room. Mariah is always dancing. That’s pretty funny. The whole team will tell you, it’s crazy. It’s definitely something that everyone has to see.

DE: What are some of your favorite things to do other than playing basketball?

SD: We do a lot of studying. But besides that I really like to read, almost any book.

DE: What is your favorite book?

SD: I read the “Last Lecture.” I can’t remember who wrote it but it is a must read. It was really inspirational. It is about this guy that had cancer and was on Oprah, it’s just really good.

DE: What do you think is your greatest accomplishment?

SD: My greatest accomplishment would be getting a scholarship to come here. I already know this is like the best four years that I have had and I’m just so excited to be here.

DE: Who is the team clown?

SD: There are a lot. I would say everyone has something different. Taylor is the weird one that just says random things. We have Mariah, who dances. Ashley says weird things now and then. All the freshmen have done something that has caused them to win a weird award.

DE: What is your dream for the rest of your life?

SD: To become a teacher is definitely something I really want to do back at home. Just to be able to coach and share what I have been through with other people so that they can do what I have done would be really cool. I want to teach like K through five, so basically all subjects at the elementary level.

DE: How did basketball affect you growing up?

SD: I think that it was a really positive influence because that is where I met my lifelong friends and that’s where I have gotten all my experience. I think that it’s just been a positive experience for me all around.

DE: If you ever came across a genie what three wishes would you want him to grant?

SD: The typical more wishes wish, because I’m greedy and I would want more. I would wish that we have a really good season this year and that we could hold off on the snow in Pullman for as long as possible.

DE: What do you want to accomplish before you leave WSU?

SD: I just want to be able to say I made it to the tournament with this team. Just one time we have to make it because I know we can do it.

DE: If you could have any superpower what would it be?

SD: I think invisibility. That is one that I have always thought I would like but I think after I while I wouldn’t like it. It would be kind of scary. I have never been invisible. Everyone sees me because I am so tall so it would nice to be in with the crowd for a little bit.
