For the Whitman County Humane Society, there is no better work than caring for the animals they house, which includes every cute and cuddly thing under the sun. If they can house it, they will take care of it.

“Besides cats and dogs, we also care for rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, and chickens,” said adoption manager Amanda Villareal, “At the moment we currently have a rooster who is looking for his fur-ever home as well.”

Located on the outskirts of Pullman, the Humane Society helps many animals find loving homes, and host a wide variety of events to help find those people. Their biggest event each year is their Fur Ball, with this year’s theme being “The Great Catsby and the Barking Twenties.”

The event includes a live and silent auction, keynote speakers, a parade of pets, celebrity servers, a photo booth and more, Villareal said. They host a variety of other events, like Pet Your Stress Away, a collaboration with the Student Entertainment Board and WSU Athletics.

They also host adoption events with local businesses, and “Cruzin’ for Critters,” a motorcycle poker run for homeless pets, and a drive for goods to help these pets.

For those running these events, it is a service they enjoy providing. Part of what makes it so enjoyable is the animals that take haven at the Humane Society.

“Whether you volunteer once a month or every day, the animals are always here and they always need to be cared for and loved,” Villareal said. “The environment here is filled with so much love and passion. It’s hard not to fall in love with the facility itself.”

However, Villareal added, the Humane Society couldn’t get by without its volunteers.

“Without our volunteers, our staff would be absolutely overwhelmed,” Villareal said. “We are so grateful and appreciate all of our volunteers.”
