Volleyball takes on top 25 team

From staff reports

WSU volleyball hits the road for Tennessee to participate in the third tournament of their preseason. The team is currently 5-1, having won its previous two tournaments.

“This whole preseason we’ve tried to play tougher teams than we have in the past preseasons.” Head Coach Jen Greeny said Tuesday in a press conference. “That’s really why we wanted to play a top 25 (team) so we’re going to see that in Illinois.”

The Cougs are set to face Virginia Tech, Belmont and No. 12 ranked Illinois in the Middle Tennessee State Tournament, Blue Raider Bash. The tournament begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

One player on the WSU women’s volleyball team stands out in her performance this preseason. Chelsey Bettinson totaled 47 kills last weekend in the Golden Dome Invite, scoring 22 kills in just one match. Bettinson was also named to the all-tournament team for the weekend.

“Chelsey has just been on fire so far this season and she has done just a fantastic job throughout her career of just working hard every single day,” Coach Greeny said.

Bettinson is one of three team captains, alongside outside hitter Jaicee Harris and libero Kate Sommer. Coach Greeny said their strengths are not going unnoticed. She explained leadership plays a big role in this team, and the players’ passion, fire and strong work ethic make her proud they were selected for the all-tournament-team.
