Calling northwest artists

From staff reports

The deadline to submit work for the Moscow Third Street Gallery’s “Art Celebrates Wilderness” exhibit has been extended to 5 p.m. Oct. 13. Original artwork of any medium is welcome in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

Moscow Art Assistant DJ Scallorn said the deadline has been extended to allow more artists to submit their work.

“The exhibit offers artists who live within the Northwest region of the United States an opportunity to showcase their works in a gallery setting,” Scallorn said.

Artists must be at least 18 years old and live in the Northwest to submit entries. If artists sell their work displayed at the gallery a 20 percent commission and 6 percent sales tax must be included.

“This will be an opportunity to see wonderful works featuring wild lands and wilderness places,” Scallorn said. “Art has a way of transporting the viewer to new and wondrous places all through the artist’s brush, camera or creative media.”

Art will be displayed from Oct. 23 to Nov. 20 at the Third Street Gallery. An opening reception will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 and will feature a “Women in Wilderness” speaker panel.

Also in celebration of the 50th anniversary, a five-part speaker series starring wilderness scholars will take place Thursdays, Oct. 23 and 30, and Nov. 6, 13 and 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Moscow City Hall. The Idaho Humanities Council will host the series, titled “Wilderness Considered.”

Each meeting will include a lecture and discussion with a history, literature or political science scholar. Those interested must register in advance, deadline to sign up for the speaker series is Oct. 20. To get more information on “Wilderness Considered,” contact Moscow Public Library.
