Battle in Boise; women’s tennis looks strong in season opener

From staff reports

Boise was kind to the WSU women’s tennis team as they smashed the competition in their season-opening tournament.

The Cougars faced off against Weber State, Boise State and Montana over the course of three days at the Jack Taylor Classic in Boise, Idaho, last weekend. The Jack Taylor Classic is played in a hidden dual format where team scores are not kept.

Play got under way last Friday. The Cougars opened with their top three doubles pairings winning matches against Montana. The team’s only loss of the day came when the pairing of Grace Lymer-Sullivan and Nastia Vasyukhina lost to Boise State’s Bobbi Oshiro and Sammie Watson.

The Cougars went undefeated in eight total matches in singles play. Six were played against Weber State and an additional two against Boise State. Freshmen Lymer-Sullivan and Vashyukhin got their first career victories in singles play, after dropping their opening doubles match.

The Cougs then looked to carry their momentum from Friday into their Saturday matches. They won their first three doubles matches against Weber State but suffered their first loss of the day in their last doubles match against Boise State.

In singles play on Saturday the Cougars faced their biggest challenge of the weekend. In eight singles matches against Boise State, WSU was only able to capture three victories. The Cougars bounced back from that, however, and claimed five of six singles matches against Montana. Junior Lize Leenknecht went undefeated in three matches, winning one doubles match and two singles matches.

WSU finished up their strong showing in the tournament on Sunday. The Cougars played six singles matches against Montana and won five of them. They then played Boise State in two final singles matches, and lost both of them. WSU exacted their revenge against the Broncos by claiming three of four doubles matches.

Leenknecht went undefeated throughout the entire tournament, winning a total of seven matches. She played alongside senior Elizaveta Luzina and the doubles pairing faced little challenge. The pair dropped a total of four games in their three matches.

Luzina came into the tournament as the only nationally ranked player on the team. She was ranked No. 66 in the International Tennis Association preseason poll. Luzina played at the number one singles spot and posted a record of 3-1 over the course of the tournament.
