University Recreation is hosting many events for Mom’s Weekend, including outdoor opportunities like “Mom’s Challenge.”

Arturo Gavilanes, challenge program and climbing wall coordinator, said that “Mom’s Challenge” is his favorite event of the whole weekend. He admits his bias as the director of the ropes course, but calls the event “a lot of fun.”

“Mom’s Challenge” is a ropes course that includes tasks on the ground, but also features elevated challenges on WSU’s impressive ropes obstacle course. If heights are too daunting, he said there is also a version closer to the ground available to give everyone a chance on the ropes course.

“Anyone can take part in the challenge program’s activities,” Gavilanes said. “There’s an inherent spectrum of [athletic] ability that needs to be met, but the purpose of the event is to challenge people to find their limits.”

Although Gavilanes jokingly said he “called in very good weather,” there is a chance it might rain or snow. Thankfully, UREC is offering many indoor classes. There will be Zumba classes at the Student Recreation Center, as well as a CrossFit course, which takes place in the Chinook Student Center.

WSU also offers less structured events, such as the open climb at the climbing wall, a Kayak tour, as well as free weekend passes for moms at both the SRC and Chinook Student Center.

The SRC is even putting on an event that requires no athleticism whatsoever, called “Mom’s Tea and Spa,” which is a great chance for Cougs to relax with their moms in a spa environment.
