Alpha Sigma Phi will host the Mom’s Weekend 5k Walk/Run this year to raise money for an anti-sexual assault non-profit organization.

Samuel Oppong, who is responsible for the philanthropy and fundraising of the fraternity, said all of this year’s profits will be donated to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, or RAINN. The organization is one of Alpha Sigma Phi’s national philanthropies.

“This event is crucial to share RAINN’s message,” Oppong said, “and helps show support during Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.”

The 5k will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, starting in the tennis courts parking lot on North Fairway Road.

From the tennis courts, participants will make a loop around Beasley Coliseum, the Lighty Student Services building and the Grimes Way Playfield.

The event is $5 per person or $8 for a pair. The Women’s Resource Center will be giving out water bottles and Gatorade, while Evolve Apartments plans to hand out T-shirts and hats.

The event will also have a raffle that includes a football signed by Mike Leach. Raffle tickets are $5 each.

Aquileo Leal, a senior member of the fraternity, said this event is a great way to stay healthy and support RAINN’s message.

“The 5k is good for the community and something fun to do with parents,” Leal said. “The more support we can give RAINN, the better.”
