If you’re up for a bit of friendly competition — and some awesome cash prize — take mom to have fun with an old time favorite: bowling.

The WSU Bowling Club’s annual Mom’s Weekend bowling tournament normally involves teams and the usual set of regulations. This year, however, they’re changing it up a bit.

“The last time it was a tournament situation,” Vice President Jarrod Hammond said. “But this time we’re doing doubles in the Monte Carlo format.”

The rules are more interesting than your average game. According to Hammond, there will be different-colored pins, and the pattern those pins are set up in determines the number of points for each strike or split. The pattern and pins players hit determine the amount of money they win. This is a unique game of chance. The prizes range from $1 or more, and the bigger pots can be pretty generous.

“You can make a decent amount of money from this format,” Hammond said, though he didn’t specify how much.

And remember, it doesn’t have to be moms and their students that play.

“Most of our participants are bowlers already or part of the club,” President Megan Wittenberg said. “Moms don’t have to be the only ones playing.”

Wittenberg said she will be playing with her father, with her mom there for moral support since she isn’t a bowler. But it doesn’t have to be a parent at all – anyone interested can play.

“We want to make sure people know that it’s open to everyone,” Wittenberg said.

The bowling club is one of the older teams on campus. It was founded officially at WSU in 1952, but started at a local bowling alley in 1948. The team is active in multiple tournaments and this event will support the future competitions and goals of the club. Anyone is welcome to join, and if they aren’t interested in competing, they are welcome to simply come and have a good time.

The game will be held at Zeppoz and Mr. Z’s Casino at 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25 per person.
