Tennis runs the courts at Cougar Classic

The home courts were kind to the WSU women’s tennis team this weekend.

The Cougars took the top spot in three out of four flights in the Cougar Classic. The tournament was the second of the year for WSU, and the first one they hosted.

In the Crimson singles flight, senior Elizaveta Luzina defeated freshman Alex Bourguignon of Gonzaga in the championship match yesterday. Luzina beat Bourguignon 6-2 6-1. On her way to the final, Luzina faced junior teammate Maria Biryukova in the semifinals. Luzina dispatched of Biryukova in straight sets of 7-5 6-4.

“I didn’t start playing well right away,” Luzina said. “And then I was playing better and I think the final was my best match.”

Luzina also participated in the Crimson doubles draw with freshman teammate Donika Bashota. The pairing made it to the championship unscathed before getting knocked off by fellow cougars Biryukova and sophomore Victoria Matejevic. Last year Luzina played doubles with junior Lize Leenknecht, and they were also paired up at last week’s Jack Taylor Invitational in Boise, Idaho.

Head Coach Lisa Hart said that for this tournament the doubles pairings were mixed up so that the newcomers could play with veterans.

Luizna said her and Bashota faced issues during the match, but added that the communication wasn’t one of them.

“We didn’t have much experience playing with each other,” Luzina said. “We’ll work on it, we don’t have communication issues, we had too many errors and we’ll work on it.”

Matejevic, like Bashota, was playing in her first home match. Even though Matejevic is a year older, she was not eligible to play in matches last year. She started the year strong and had an extra advantage in the doubles final, playing teammates.

“We know how they play so we know exactly how to serve and how to return, so it’s a little easier,” Matejevic said.

In addition to winning a doubles draw, Matejevic also won the Gray singles draw. She was the only Cougar to go undefeated throughout the weekend. Matejevic didn’t drop a game in singles play before the championship match. She grinded out a 6-2 4-6 6-3 win against Boise State’s Sammie Watson to take home the title.

“I tried to play on the right balls and play within myself,” Matejevic said. “I didn’t think about the opponent, I played my game.”

Hart said she liked the way her team performed over the course of the weekend.

“I think we made another jump from last weekend,” Hart said. “We’ve really been working on constructing points and our consistency in practice and I was really impressed with how we implemented that in true matches.”

The only flight the Cougars failed to win was Gray doubles. The Idaho pair of senior Sophie Vickers and junior Belen Barcenila claimed the top of the podium for the flight.
