Color run supports Alzheimer’s research

From staff reports

Color-coated runners raised money for Alzheimer’s research Saturday morning on the WSU campus.

Sigma Kappa’s 3K Ultra Violet Color Run raised an estimated $1,000 after several last-minute donations on Sunday afternoon, said Giuliana Plut, the sorority’s vice president of philanthropy. Most of that money came from the 75 runners who registered before the event.

The run started in the parking lot across the street from the Student Recreation Center, wrapped 90 degrees around Bailey-Brayton Field, passed Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe and formed a loop on several back roads on the outskirts of campus.

“It’s short enough where if you’re out of shape you can still do it,” said freshman Nick Anderssohn, who was the first across the finish line. “It’s long enough where it can be competitive if you’re in shape.”

As students and community members jogged, walked and ran, 12 Sigma Kappa women threw plumes of colored cornstarch into the air.

The run is one of several events that Sigma Kappa holds to raise money for Alzheimer’s research. Last year the sorority hosted a dodgeball competition and a free variety show.

Plut said she hopes that, unlike past events, the color run will take place every year and remain open to all community members.

When the last registered runner crossed the finish line an hour after the race began, Sigma Kappa closed registration.
