Though Mother Nature did her damage and caused a two hour and 24 minute rain delay, the WSU women’s soccer team found a way to take the field for the first time in the 2014 season.

The delay did not slow down the Cougars, as they were in control the entire game and won by a score 3-0.

“Our kids played with a lot of energy tonight,” Head Coach Steve Nugent said in a press conference after the game. “We did a great job offensively converting a penalty kick and scoring a set piece.”

WSU sophomore defender Kailiana Johnson set the tone early for the Cougars after converting on a penalty kick in the 28th minute. The Renton native helped the Cougars to a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars would not look back from there and continued to attack the Horned Frogs. In the 39th minute of the match, WSU senior defender Mesa Owsley headed the ball into the back of the net off of a corner kick from WSU junior forward Cara Wegner.

The final goal for the Cougars came in the 74th minute of the match, which Coach Nugent described as his favorite goal of the night because of unselfish play.

WSU redshirt junior Beau Bremer crossed the ball over to Wegner, who headed the ball back to the 6-yard line and WSU senior forward Jocelyn Jeffers was there to score the final goal of the night for the Cougars.

WSU redshirt senior goalkeeper Gurveen Clair recorded four saves in the match and recorded her 25th career shutout and 35th victory.

After recording their first win of the season, the WSU women’s soccer team will have their first big test of the season as they will travel down to Provo, Utah to face off against No. 17 BYU.
