Adapting the Evergreen

Dominique Wald

Being the new kid on the block has its perks, and it also has its struggles. The same also applies to launching a new department.

The Web and Mobile Department of The Daily Evergreen is responsible for creating unique and engaging content, and as head of that department, I make it my mission to do so.

The Daily Evergreen carries a rich legacy of honorable journalism.

The Web and Mobile Department has an opportunity to create a new legacy. I will spend my time working toward one that embodies everything our newspaper stands for.

The Daily Evergreen gives voice to the voiceless, and this new department gives that voice a greater reach.

One might find it intimidating to have that responsibility resting on their shoulders, but for the first time in a long time I am remembering what it’s like to be new at something again. The learning opportunities are invaluable.

The common opinion regarding journalism is that it’s a dying industry and the existence of newspapers will slowly diminish. Many people claim everything is moving to online.

But it’s silly to separate the Internet from print when in reality, both work together hand-in-hand.

The Web and Mobile Department will work toward producing content that can only be viewed online while also working closely with the newsroom to take their stories and make them into a package that is more dynamic and engaging with use of video, audio and interactive graphics.

I’m looking forward to unveiling things our team has been working on relentlessly within the past weeks.

Our department is made up of a small group, but their talent is endless. Douglas Hummer and Erin Mullen have proven their coding skills while Joshua Robinson and Marcus Grove are taking care of business on the videography side.

It’s my privilege to be a part of the Office of Student Media, but it’s an even greater privilege to plan and produce content that will make the WSU and Pullman community proud.

The beginning of this semester marks the beginning of a new department, and we hope you’re ready for the start of something new.
