WSU baseball lost 9-1 to No. 3 Oregon State University at Bailey-Brayton Field on graduation day in Pullman. The Beavers racked up 17 hits in the win.
“They were just flat out the better team today,” Head Coach Marty Lees said.
Senior outfielder JJ Hancock led off the second inning with a line drive home run to right field to give the Cougars (14-25) a 1-0 lead and their only run on the evening.
Senior left-handed pitcher Scotty Sunitsch started on the mound for WSU. He entered the game with a 2.80 ERA, ninth best in the conference.
The Beavers (35-7) got to Sunitsch in the third. OSU junior infielder Nick Madrigal tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field and sophomore catcher Adley Rutschman followed with an RBI single to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead.
OSU added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Redshirt senior outfielder Kyle Nobach hit a two-run home run to left field and the Beavers took advantage of two singles, a wild pitch and an error to score two more runs in the inning and extend their lead to 6-1.
With two outs and a runner on second in the fifth inning, WSU sophomore outfielder Danny Sinatro dove toward the right center field gap, leaving his feet and extending fully to make a catch that robbed OSU sophomore outfielder Preston Jones of a single and an RBI.
“I don’t really think too much out there, I kind of just react,” Sinatro said of the catch.
Sunitsch ended his day allowing six runs, five earned on 12 hits in five and one-third innings of work.
The Beavers added another run off redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Davis Baillie in the seventh and two more off redshirt sophomore left-handed pitcher Isaac Mullins in the eighth.
WSU left seven men on base, recording seven hits and a walk in the game.
The series concludes noon Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
