Police responded Thursday morning to the report of a break-in at 1340 Old Moscow Road, where they apprehended a cat burglar.

The 17-year-old boy, who had broken a window to get inside the Whitman County Humane Society shelter, was attempting to steal a cat.

The incident took place around 8:30 a.m., when the shelter is closed for animal care.

The boy was booked into the Whitman County Jail on a charge of second-degree burglary, which is a felony.

CORRECTION – 7/14/2014: The original version of this article incorrectly stated that the sound of a window breaking alerted workers and animals inside the shelter. The shelter was closed at that time, and no workers were inside.
