Roller derby league to host exhibition bout

PULLMAN – Women’s roller derby teams the Lumberjanes and Destruction Zone will face off June 20 in an exhibition-style bout titled the “Summer Jam.”

The teams make up the non-profit league called the Palouse River Rollers, and the “Summer Jam” will be their second bout of the season. They went head-to-head in March, resulting in a Lumberjanes win with a close final score of 127-125.

“Intraleague bouts are a great chance for skaters to improve their skills, and they also give us an opportunity to interact with the community,” said league president Stacy Pettitt, who skates under the alter ego Betty Rumble.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. at the Gladish Community and Cultural Center, and the first whistle will sound at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased from the skaters or at the door.

Lentil Festival organizers seek creative recipes

PULLMAN – The deadline to submit recipes for this year’s Legendary Lentil Cook-Off is 5:00 p.m. on June 23. Cooks from across the country may enter the 20th annual competition, which takes place during the National Lentil Festival.

The first place winner will receive $2000 and a National Lentil Festival chef’s hat. Second place will receive $1000, and third will receive $500. Additionally there is a $100 prize for the people’s choice recipe.

A panel of food experts will pre-screen each recipe and invite five finalists to reproduce their recipes at the festival. Their creations will then be tasted by a panel of judges and the first 100 festival goers.

The panel will assess each recipe by ease of preparation, taste, texture, creativity, appearance and use of lentils. The top five recipes will be cooked and tested for accuracy before the panel chooses the finalists.

The 2013 competition included 117 recipes from 32 states and Canada.

‘Reptile Man’ to show scaly friends at public library

PULLMAN – Reptile Man Scott Petersen will display his unique collection of scaled creatures June 24 at the Neill Public Library.

Petersen has shown the reptiles at hundreds of events across the Pacific Northwest and appeared on the Disney show “Bill Nye, the Science Guy.” His informative show is designed for all ages.

The show, sponsored by the Friends of Neill Public Library, is part of the library’s summer reading program. It will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Heritage Addition of the library. Admission is free.

Idaho theater group to read “Happy”

MOSCOW – The play “Happy,” written by University of Idaho professor Robert Caisley, will be performed as a staged reading June 27 at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Center.

Produced by the Idaho Repertory Theatre, the reading will be the first time the script has been presented in Idaho. The play has been performed across the country and has won or been nominated for several awards.

The reading will begin at 7:30 p.m. after a no-host wine reception and book signing at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $30 and can be purchased at BookPeople of Moscow, the UI Theatre Arts office or at the door.

Festival in Moscow to showcase sustainability

MOSCOW – Local groups and businesses will gather June 28 to generate interest in ecological sustainability on the Palouse.

The inaugural Sustainability Festival, an event coordinated by the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute, will feature live music and around 20 booths. The goal of the event is to educate people about reducing their impact on the environment.

Programs coordinator Daniel Sidder said each participating group supports sustainability in some way, noting that The Storm Cellar sells recycled clothes, and the WSU Entomology Graduate Student Association knows about bug life in the area.

The event will take place from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the PCEI Nature Center, 1040 Rodeo Drive.
