Cougars recruit four-star linebacker

From staff reports

The Cougars have rounded off their 2014 recruiting class with a four-star linebacker from Bellflower, Calif.

Chandler Leniu has made a last-minute switch to play for WSU, which was his initial plan before signing a letter of intent near signing day to play for Cal Berkeley.

At 6 feet tall and 220 pounds, Leniu was highly rated by recruiters and was considered one of the top middle linebackers in the country. In 2013 he had 238 tackles as well as 15 sacks and 2 interceptions on a 16-0 team that won him a No. 1 national ranking by the website MaxPreps.

Leniu was considered the “heart and soul” of that defense, his high school coach Jason Negro said.

Normally, transferring after signing a letter of intent would leave a player on the bench for a year. But since Cal granted him a release from the school, he is immediately eligible to play for the Cougs.
