WSU athletes take to the podium at Pac-12 Championships

WSU athletes can look forward with confidence to national championships after their strong presence on the podium during the second weekend of the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships.

Junior Charlotte Muschamp won the high jump with a jump of 5-11 ½ on Saturday. Muschamp also jumped 42-1 ½ to take second place in the triple jump on Sunday.

Muschamp had spent much of the outdoor season injured, but the home meet environment helped to fuel her performance.

“Being at home and having the crowd was a great opportunity to show how hard I’ve been working,” she said.

Muschamp, originally from Edendale, New Zealand, called her cheering section her “American family” and expressed gratitude for their support. Additionally, she received support from her New Zealand family when Muschamp’s father woke up at 3 a.m. to call her from New Zealand before she left for the meet on Saturday.

WSU senior Shaquana Logan and junior Abby Regan also placed. Logan took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.58 seconds. Regan took fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 10.15 seconds.

The WSU women’s team finished eighth overall with a final score of 46.5 points. The Oregon women took first with 176 points.

In men’s track and field, WSU freshman CJ Allen stood out. Allen took first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.14 seconds. Allen was also part of the 4×400-meter relay team that took third with a time of 3 minutes, 10.48 seconds.

“It’s exactly what I’ve been working so hard for all year,” Allen said of his win in the 400-meter hurdles.

Allen only competed in 400 hurdles five times in his career and said he is continuously learning.

WSU senior Andrew Gonzales took third in the steeplechase with a time of 8 minutes, 57.4 seconds. Gonzales made the move to third after spending much of the race in fifth. Gonzales said he could not have performed so well without the support from the home crowd, especially his dad.

WSU senior Kyle Stevens took third in the javelin with a throw of 224-9. Stevens’ throw was a personal best, and he also said the support of the home crowd and his family helped him perform better.

The men’s 4×100-meter relay team placed sixth with a time of 45.46 seconds.

The WSU men’s team placed ninth overall with 66.50 points. The Oregon men won with 163.25 points.
