Crossing the border; Soccer heads to Idaho for spring games

From staff reports

Spring is starting to bloom, and the Cougars continue their spring season as they head into the second weekend of action.

The Washington State women’s soccer team hits the road to Boise, Idaho, tomorrow to take on the Boise State Broncos and the Utah State Aggies.

Instead of harping on the results of each contest, Head Coach Steve Nugent said the team views spring soccer as a small step in the process of achieving the overall goal of a quality spring season.

After splitting the two match ups against Gonzaga and Idaho last weekend, the team has since returned to the practice field.

“We’ve had a really good week of practice,” Nugent said, adding that these practices have allowed them to show some things they want to do this weekend and develop individually.

Boise State and Utah State are two formidable opponents for the Cougars. Both teams ended the year with winning records, and Nugent said he looks forward to the opportunity to present his team with a tough road test.

“I’d love to see personally when we aren’t around family and friends,” Nugent said. “It’ll be a challenge for us.”

Sophomore forwards Cara Wegner and Mariah Powers shined in last weekend’s match, each scoring a goal against Idaho. Cooks is listed as a defender, but is now playing in an advanced role.

Unlike the last couple of games, the games this weekend will have two 35-minute halves. Nugent said the change in formatting won’t change the rotation or what the team is trying to do.

The game against the Broncos on Saturday is slated for a 12:30 p.m. start time. After earning his first home victory as Cougar head coach last weekend, the Saturday games will be Nugent’s first chance to earn a road victory as a Cougar.
