ASWSU considers gender and restrooms

From staff reports

Gender-neutral bathrooms were a topic of discussion yesterday evening, when the ASWSU voted unanimously in support of a resolution that calls for at least one of them to be installed in each extensively renovated and newly constructed building on the Pullman campus.

The resolution, spearheaded by ASWSU Senate Pro Tempore LaKecia Farmer, states “individual unisex or all-gendered bathrooms provide a safe, private, and comfortable environment.” It also notes that more than 150 college campuses in the U.S. offer gender-inclusive restrooms.

Connor Wolcott, the assistant director of diversity for the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), said the resolution puts the rights of gender non-conforming people “in the spotlight.”

“It brings the issue to the forefront of students’ minds,” Wolcott said. “I think by putting out a resolution by the ASWSU, you introduce the topic, and it’s the first step in creating a campus that is accepting and respectful.”
