Despite a few a strong individual performances, the WSU men’s golf team only managed an 11th place finish in Marana, Ariz., at the Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championship.

The first round of the tournament Friday was a bit of struggle outside of the performance by junior Michael Anderson. He led the Pac-12 field with five birdies to finish 2-under par (70) while the Cougar team concluded the round in 11th place carding a 384 (+24).

Darkness fell on the first day of competition, preventing Charlie Mroz and Blake Snyder from finishing play.

“It’s a very challenging course,” WSU Head Coach Garrett Clegg said in a press release. “You’re seeing a lot more bogeys than you normally see at this tournament. Once you hit a ball off the fairway it can be difficult to find. For us, we just aren’t making some of the shots we need to. The wind died down in the afternoon, but there were four or five holes that we didn’t make shots that we should have.”

On Saturday, the Cougars carded a 376 (+16), the fourth lowest score of the day, 10 strokes within ninth-place Oregon State.

Snyder led the Cougars throughout the third round, hitting 2-under (70) and a three-round score of 219 (+3), tying him for eighth. Anderson and Mroz each shot 1-over (73) on the day. Anderson was three strokes behind Snyder at 6-over (222) tied for 17th. Mroz (+12, 228) tied for 36th.

“Blake and Michael and Charlie played some fantastic golf today,” Clegg said after round three. “As a team I think we had one of the best scores of the day. If we can get that performance from all of our guys tomorrow, we have the opportunity to finish really well.”

After four rounds, the team finished with a final score of 1510 (+70) beating out Utah to avoid 12th place.

The leading scorer of the group was Snyder who finished tied for fourth, hitting 1-under par (287). The next best score came from Mroz who finished tied for 40th with a score of 302 (+14) followed by Anderson with a score of 304 (+16).
