Ever since the Cougars put on the pads, the intensity has increased, resulting in more fights breaking out between defensive and offensive players. Day six was no exception.

“It’s always like that, it’s always going to be intense when the pads come on,” junior running back Teondray Caldwell said. “We all competitive, so there are going to be fights regardless.”

Caldwell and the WSU running backs continue to split reps with the team at practice and are fighting for a starting position in the backfield.

“Everybody can play at this level,” Caldwell said. “We all come out here, we compete with each other, but at the end of the day we all brothers, so it’s a good competition.”

Head Coach Mike Leach mentioned WSU redshirt junior running back Theron West has been the most explosive running back for the Cougars so far in this spring, and also wants to get WSU redshirt freshman running back Jamal Morrow into more of a rhythm.

Sticking on the offensive side, redshirt freshman quarterback Luke Falk and redshirt senior quarterback Connor Halliday split reps today during the 7-on-7 drill and scrimmage portion of practice.

Falk finished the day completing 13-of-19 passes, threw three touchdowns during the 7-on-7 drills, and was sacked twice.

“I thought I did a better job today than I have in the past,” Falk said. “I think each day, I’m getting better, the team’s getting better. I thought the team did a nice job today, a little slow start on the team (scrimmage) but towards the end we got it put together.”

Leach said he thought Falk played well today, and will continue to rotate reps between the redshirt freshman quarterback and other redshirt quarterback Tyler Bruggman.

Halliday completed 18-of-20 passes, threw two touchdowns and was not sacked during the 7-on-7 drill in practice.

Redshirt senior Kristoff Williams continues to evolve as one of the main offensive weapons for the Cougars, and hauled in a couple of touchdown catches during the 7-on-7 drill.

Leach said the redshirt senior wide receiver has always had the ability to make an explosive play, but at times gets inconsistent. However, Leach said Williams played consistently today.

“(I’m) just getting more comfortable, my senior year, knowing it’s my last time out and just trying to get ready, so I don’t look back and have any regrets,” Williams said. “So it’s just a matter of being comfortable.”

The Cougars will resume spring practice Thursday in Martin Stadium.
