Rockin’ with Mom

We all have so much love in our hearts for the wonderful woman we call mom. So much love, our campus dedicates an entire weekend to show just how much we appreciate them.

To go along with Mom’s Weekend, I’ve created a playlist of songs devoted to you and your mom. With girl power ballads, classic jams and recent hits, this list will bridge the gap between their glory days and yours.

Starting out the Songs for Moms playlist is Queen’s “Tie Your Mother Down.” Queen is such a guilty pleasure of mine. Over spring break I was listening to a bunch of their old vinyls and couldn’t help but jam out to them.

Following suit is the late, great King of Pop, Michael Jackson himself with his hit single “Billie Jean.” It’s almost impossible to not get excited anytime Michael comes on, let’s be real.

Between Bon Jovi, Heart, Hall & Oates and Foreigner, there are 11 80s throwback songs your mother will appreciate. They’re all classics our generation knows well, so there are no excuses not to shout the chorus along with her.

The Lonely Island then sings “Motherlover,” which starts out the section of songs devoted specifically to Mom. Will.i.am, Kanye West, Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride follow, providing a little bit of something for everybody’s liking.

To really show the women who raised us just how much we care and admire her, I’ve included some girl-power ballads to give Mom a little boost of energy (because we all know she’ll need it while visiting WSU).

Christina Aguilera’s song “Can’t Hold us Down” featuring Lil’ Kim is the perfect way to set the tone. Trailing behind is Katy Perry’s “Roar” and “Mama Knows Best” by Jessie J.  All these girls have got pipes. It’s almost ridiculous how full their vocals are.

Thus we end our playlist similarly yet differently than we started with THE queen, Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls).”

From Queen to the queen, we come full circle in anticipation of having our beloved mothers come visit the Zzu. Don’t forget that your mom was once your age and she probably still feels like she is, so do her and yourself a favor and make it an unforgettable weekend by setting the right mood with the perfect playlist.
