ATVP and sorority host a tasting for a cause

Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse and Alpha Chi Omega are combating sexual assault with wine.

The two organizations will host a fundraiser “Champagne Tea” event at Brelsford Visitor Center today as part of the university’s Mom’s Weekend schedule.

This Visitor Center will be converted into a “Spring Garden” themed tea nook for those looking to experience a traditional English tea experience, browse local art, and support victims of domestic violence on the Palouse.

Each attendee can expect bistro tables dawned with fine china and three different kinds of English teas, with the option of donating to receive a glass of champagne or cider. Guests can watch a slideshow of the work that ATVP has done for the community while dining on treats and sandwiches.

“It’s pretty relaxed, a fun time to hang out with your friends and your mom,” said Calista Currie, vice president of philanthropy at Alpha Chi Omega.

The tea is not exclusive to moms, families are welcome to stop by and purchase a raffle ticket, glass of champagne, or one of the pieces of art that will be on display. There will also be silent auctions, a professional photographer, and a quartet playing throughout the night.

The Alpha Chi Omega sorority has put on past events with Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse including the “Mr. Alpha Chi King” pageant and a bowling tournament.

Established in 1980, Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse helps victims of domestic crimes by offering a 24-hour hotline and legal and personal advocates.

“We work to be able to provide immediate and experienced advocates,” said Christine Wall, ATVP executive director. “We want to address these crimes at a primary prevention level.”

ATVP also has a shelter where families can find refuge at an undisclosed location as well as assistance and education in relocation and employment.

“Our goal is to educate people enough to put ourselves out of business,” Administrator Deena Kinkeade said.

Alpha Chi Omega President Haley Kennedy said, “Domestic violence happens all the time on the college campus, and we want to give back to something that hits so close to home.”

The both times for the event, 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., are sold out, but anybody passing by is encouraged to take a seat in one of the bistro chairs and enjoy a sparkling beverage in efforts to help support local victims and their families.

Each glass of champagne is $5.50 and 100 percent of the money raised will go directly to the Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse organization.
