Cougar volleyball cruises in spring tournament

Piling up victory after victory, the Washington State volleyball team eventually walked away from its spring tournament undefeated.

Each match was a best-of-three sets contest instead of the standard best-of-five sets contest the team plays in the fall. Regardless, the Cougars had no problem dominating each of their three opponents on the day starting with the Idaho Vandals. WSU took the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-18. Next up was a showdown with the Wildcats of Central Washington. Again the Cougars had no problem achieving a sweep this time by scores of 25-18 and 25-11. In the finale against Eastern Washington, the Cougars found themselves facing slightly tougher competition. WSU took the first set 25-19, but went down to the wire in the second, positing a narrow 26-24 victory against the Eagles.

“Playing in the Pac-12, all those matches are tight, and we had a lot of close ones in the 2013 season,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said after defeating EWU. “So really being able to finish a set like that is important.”

Freshman outside hitter Kyra Holt led the WSU in kills with 22 on the day. Holt also contributed 10 digs. Holt was just one of four Cougars to record double-digit kills on Saturday. Joining her was freshman outside hitter Emmy Allen (16), junior middle blocker Ver’Leea Hardaway (12), and junior middle blocker Chelsey Bettinson (10).

“I thought we did a lot of really good things today,” Greeny said. “Probably the best was offensively. I thought our hitters did really well today, and the setters made a lot of really good choices and running the tempo that we want.”

Defensively, sophomore libero Kate Sommer led the Cougars with 20 digs followed by freshman defensive specialist Tani Stephens with 11 digs.

“I think our chemistry is getting a lot better,” junior outside hitter Jaicee Harris said. “Just the little things and staying consistent is what we need to work at.”

Harris said the spring practices are paying off for the team, which resulted in positive results in the tournament.

The final tournament of the spring for WSU will take place at Gonzaga, where in addition to facing the Bulldogs the Cougars will compete against Idaho, Seattle and Eastern Washington

“We still have a lot to work on, but they’re definitely improving a lot this spring,” Greeny said.
