Breweries offer a sip and a hop

From staff reports

Something is brewing in Moscow this weekend that will have the entire Palouse hopping.

This Friday at the 1912 Center, Buy Local Moscow BrewFest 2014 will showcase local breweries, wineries and cider houses. The event will feature live music, catered food, and raffle tickets sold at the door.

BLM’s purpose is to promote locally-owned businesses and keep local resources alive. Similar to the activities occurring during BrewFest this weekend, the Buy Local Moscow regularly has raffles, business punch cards, and digital scavenger hunts available.

“It’s a great way to discover local businesses,” said Louise Todd, president of BLM. She said she believes promoting local breweries at BrewFest offers a better carbon footprint due to the use of local ingredients.

Many beers, wines and ciders will be included with the attendance of more than six breweries and wineries.

“It gives community members a chance to be introduced to the breweries in the area,” said Emily Schwartz of River City Brewing Co. in Spokane. “We employ local members, we use local ingredients, and we buy and sell to [the] local community.”

Each company brings at least two brews, ciders or wines to showcase giving companies an opportunity to intimately market with their consumers and find out exactly what is most popular among them.

“My favorite part is getting to talk to people and figure out what it is they like, introducing them to new beer,” Schwartz said. “A lot of people have awesome stories about their brewing experience.”

This event is only two years old and all proceeds go to the Buy Local group.

“The Moscow BrewFest is expecting about 300 people,” said Tom Handy, owner of Paradise Creek Brewery in Pullman. The community is encouraged to get tickets soon as the event is likely to sell out as it did last year.

The tickets for this 21-and-over event are sold at Mikey’s Gyros, Moscow Alehouse, Camas Prairie Winery and Moscow Brewing Company for $10 in advance. The event will be held Friday, April 25, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the 1912 Center in Moscow.
