No. 18 WSU took down Arizona State University in three sets Sunday afternoon. After losing to University of Arizona on Friday night, the Cougars came back to end the weekend with a win.

The first set was not competitive as the Cougars were able to gain the lead early and keep it for the remainder of the set, resulting in a 25-12 win. WSU came into the game with a will to win and the first set showed the intensity the team had.

In the second set, Arizona State was able to fight back to lead 15-10 midway through the set. However, WSU was able to regain its lead and hold it for the rest of the set. The Cougars grabbed their second set win at 25-20 in what was a slower matchup than the first.

The third set was the closest, but the Cougars were able to come out with a 25-21 win. Arizona State went on multiple small runs throughout the set but it was not enough to compete with WSU’s attacking offense.

Head Coach Jen Greeny said she was proud of how the team bounced back from a tough loss against Arizona on Friday.

“I was really proud of how everybody fought back and was ready to go,” Greeny said. “Everybody was just really focused from the beginning of the match today.”

WSU added another win to its record, advancing the team to an overall record of 18-6 and an 8-1 record in Bohler Gym. The only loss the Cougars have faced at home was against Arizona on Friday when they lost 3-2.

Redshirt junior middle blocker Jocelyn Urias led the team with 13 kills, followed by senior outside hitter McKenna Woodford who tallied 11 kills on the match. Senior outside hitter Taylor Mims returned to the court against Arizona after being sidelined the last five games with an undisclosed injury and tallied nine kills and four blocks in the game with the Sun Devils.

Greeny said she was very impressed both Urias’ and senior middle blocker Claire Martin’s successes playing against Arizona State.

“Love to see [Urias] with those numbers and that kind of production,” Greeny said. “[Martin] is a fantastic blocker and it’s been fun that she’s back in the middle. It’s a really tough block to get around and that showed this afternoon.”

The Cougars will look to ride the momentum against Arizona State as they travel to Los Angeles to face University of California, Los Angeles, at 6 p.m. Thursday in Pauley Pavilion.
