Great pitching led the WSU baseball team to a 2-0 win over No. 14 UCLA Friday night.

Jason Monda (1-1) had his best start of the season for the Cougars (9-9, 3-1 Pac-12) as he pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing only four hits and striking out five batters.

Monda left the game with the cougars in a bit of hot water in the eighth, with runners at the corners and only one out. However, senior Kellen Camus and sophomore Matt Bower walked one and struck out two Bruins (12-8, 3-1) to preserve the shutout for the Cougs.

Ian Hamilton gave up a two-out hit to UCLA’s Luke Persico in the ninth, but was flawless other than that to earn his conference leading seventh save of the season.

The Cougars’ offense was paced by second baseman Ian Sagdal, who was four-for-four on the night. Sagdal drove in the game’s first run with a two-out single in the second inning that scored Nick Tanielu.

Tanielu scored both of WSU’s runs as a Ben Roberts two-out single in the sixth inning scored him and posted the eventual final score of 2-0.

The victory earned the Cougars their fifth straight road win and got them to the .500 mark for the first time since Feb. 15 when they were 1-1. After sweeping the mid-week series against San Diego, WSU’s last three wins have all been against ranked opponents.

Game two between the Cougars and Bruins will likely feature two left-handed juniors on the mound in form of Joe Pistorese (1-0) and Grant Watson (3-1). Saturday’s first pitch is scheduled for two o’clock and can be heard on uclabruins.com.
