Home stretch

With just two home games remaining, WSU women’s basketball Head Coach June Daugherty said these final contests are ones fans don’t want to miss.

The Cougars (14-12, 8-6 Pac-12) face off against Oregon State (17-9, 9-5 Pac-12) tonight and Oregon (13-12, 4-10 Pac-12) on Sunday.

Coming off a Pac-12 Player of the Week award that featured two 32-point games, junior guard Tia Presley is focused on maintaining her self-assurance throughout the weekend.

“I’ve just tried to carry over confidence, and that’s helped me a lot this season,” Presley said. “I’ve just tried to maintain my confidence throughout the season, even when my shot wasn’t falling.”

The Cougars sit at seventh place in the conference standings and are tied with rival Washington in conference wins. WSU is currently ‘on the bubble’ regarding the NCAA Tournament, according to the most recent bracketology by ESPN’s Charlie Creme.

Presley said the team is looking to get another sweep, and every Pac-12 victory they can get at this point is crucial.

“Everyone’s so determined. We’ve said (the NCAA Tournament) is the goal from the beginning,” Presley said. “We need to get two more wins. We’re trying to finish off the end of Pac-12 play really strong.”

Sunday’s game against Oregon is Senior Night for forwards Brandi Thomas, Hana Potter, and Sage Romberg.

“I’m really excited for this weekend,” Romberg said. “I think it’s a really good opportunity for us to get two wins and get us higher in the standings. It’s my last weekend at home so I’m excited for it.”

Romberg is currently third on the team in scoring, and she averages nine points per game in conference play. She enters the week with the third-highest 3-point shooting percentage in the Pac-12 with 43 percent.

“Going into these last couple games, I’ve really thought about how much this team has improved since I got here,” she said. “So I feel an accomplishment. It’s just amazing to see how much it’s progressed, just how much better the team is this year.”

Daugherty has turned the program around with the most wins this season since the mid-90s. The 14 overall wins are the most since the 1995-96 team won 18 games, according to WSU Athletics.

Daugherty said these games are an opportunity for the fans in Beasley Coliseum to give the senior players the great send-off they deserve. She said the seniors are leaving the program having improved their games since arriving at WSU.

“If you’re any kind of Cougar fan, or if you’re any kind of basketball fan, you want to be here Friday and Sunday,” Daugherty said. “It’s going to be a special time against two very, very good opponents. Two critical games for the season, it doesn’t get much bigger than this.”

Tonight’s game against Oregon State tips off at 7 p.m. and the Senior Night game against the Ducks begins at 1 p.m.
