AColfax Police Chief Rick McNannay was fired last Thursday after being placed on administrative leave since October, Colfax City Attorney John Kragt announced Tuesday night at the Colfax City Council meeting. Kragt read aloud the city’s formal statement on McNannay’s firing.
According to the City of Colfax press release, McNannay was under investigation for alleged “dishonesty” related to state-mandated police officer training and certification.
The three-month investigation was carried out by an independent third party, according to the press release. The details of the investigation and its findings have not been made public.
McNannay seeks to fight the dismissal and has appealed to the Colfax Civil Service Commission, according to a Pullman Radio report.
A new police chief cannot be named until McNannay’s appeal process is completed, Colfax Mayor Todd Vanek said Tuesday. A date for the appeal has not been set.
Vanek said the firing will not impact police coverage in Colfax, though The Spokesman-Review reported the Colfax police force now relies on the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office to respond to calls.
