Stargazing 101
January 17, 2014
Tonight, expand the mind and explore the universe with a tour of the night sky. The WSU planetarium will host “Stargazing 101,” a presentation for amateur and professional star gazers alike. Participants will be given a star chart and pointers on how to easily read spot constellations and extraterrestrial marvels.
In the past, the physics department hosted fewer presentations at the planetarium than it currently has scheduled this semester. Members of the physics department are attempting to draw attention to the planetarium by making fun and interesting activities, like “Stargazing 101” and other events, available to the public.
Guy Worthey, associate professor of astronomy, said there will be something new happening every month this spring. The goal of these programs is to give basic instructions on how to easily understand what is visible in the night sky and appreciate it, Worthey said.
Students can attend “Stargazing 101” presentations at 7 p.m. Friday and at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The cost is $10 at the door, $7 for students who purchase early, and free for children under 6 years old.
The planetarium is located on campus at Sloan Hall 231.
