WSU Women’s Tennis walked away from their season opener with a 7-0 victory against Montana State and a 5-0 victory against Idaho on Friday. This marks nine straight season opener victories for Cougar tennis.

“This is a very good start to our season,” said WSU women’s tennis Head Coach Lisa Hart.

Doubles kicked off the day with WSU’s No. 1 team of Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht as they defeated Montana State’s Iva Parapunova and Paulina Lopez 6-1. No. 2 team Olga Musilovich and Maria Biryukova clinched the doubles victory with a 6-2 win against Ellie Crum and Wena Tsan.

The Cougs continued to pour it on with No.1 Luzina shutting out Parapunova 6-0, 6-0 in singles play. In No. 2 singles, Biryukova defeated Laura Middel 6-2, 6-2 while No. 3 Leenknecht beat Lopez 6-3, 6-1.

“I felt we played well against Montana State and then against Idaho when we were tested, we responded with some big points,” Hart said.

Luzina and Leenknecht continued the Cougar winning streak with a 6-0 win over Idaho’s Almudena Sanz and Vicky Lozano in No. 1 doubles. Musilovich and Biryukova secured the doubles point with a 6-2 win against Idaho’s Rita Bermudez and Galina Bykova in No. 2 doubles.

In No. 1 singles, Luzina jumped to a 5-0 lead against Almudena Sanz before Sanz fought back to a 5-5 tie. After a 6-6 tiebreaker, Luzina finished the Idaho senior in the first set 7-3 and went on to win 7-6, 6-3. In No. 2 singles, Leenknecht came from behind in both sets to secure the match for the Cougars, winning 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) against Lozano.

No. 3 Biryukova posted a 6-2, 7-5 win against Bykova while No. 4 Musilovich defeated Belen Barcenilla 6-2,6-3, ending the match in a 4-0 overall victory for the WSU singles.

“Idaho is a good team and to come away from that match with a 5-0 victory is a good result,” Hart said.

Next weekend, the Cougars will travel to Hawaii where they will play Hawaii Pacific Friday and Hawaii Saturday.
