Meet the freshmen

This year’s crop of newcomers have stepped up in the game, but now is the opportunity for fans to learn who they are off the court. Evergreen Men’s Basketball reporter Evan Baron got to know the guys behind the uniforms.

DeMarquise “Que” Johnson- Johnson grew up in Pontiac, Mich. and attended prep school at Westwind Prep Academy in Phoenix, Ariz. During the 2010-11 season, Johnson lead Westwind Prep to a 30-2 record and the Class 2A State Championship, according to wsucougars.com. The 6-foot-5, 205 pound guard averaged 20.8 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game at Westwind Prep. He was rated as a four star recruit and the No. 17 best small forward in the country for the 2012 recruiting class, according to rivals.com. Johnson was forced to miss last season and redshirt after being ruled academically ineligible by the NCAA. So far this season Johnson is averaging 9.4 points, 0.8 assists, and 2.2 rebounds a game.

Ikenna Iroegbu- Iroegbu attended Franklin High School in Elk Groove, Calif. before transferring to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth Hill, Va., according to wsucougars.com. During his junior year at Oak Hill Academy, the point guard helped his team achieve the No.1 ranked high school basketball team in the country, along with winning the national high school basketball championship that season, according to wsucougars.com. His senior year, he averaged 12.0 points, four assists, and four rebounds a game, according to wsucougars.com. The 6-foot-2, 190 pound point guard was a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 30 best point guard in the country for the 2013 recruiting class, according to rivals.com. Iroegbu has averaged 6.6 points, 1.6 assists and 2.2 rebounds a game for the Cougars so far this season, according to espn.com.

Josh Hawkinson: Hawkinson is from Shoreline and attended Shorewood High School. Besides basketball, Hawkinson played baseball at Shorewood High School, according to wsucougars.com. The 6-foot-10, 245 pound forward averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks per game during his senior year. Hawkinson led his team to a 15-8 overall record and a second round finish in the playoffs last season, according to wsucougars.com. The forward is averaging 1.4 points and 2.0 rebounds a game for the Cougars so far this season.
