WSU tennis edged out Baylor 4-3 on Friday in Waco, Texas to improve to 3-1 on the road this season.
The Cougars (7-1) opened up the match by claiming the doubles point. WSU and Baylor split the first two doubles matches before freshman Hikaru Sato and senior Tiffany Mylonas won the third to help the Cougars take a 1-0 lead.
“I’m happy for our team as this was a very good road win,” Head Coach Lisa Hart said. “Winning the doubles point is always huge and today we were able to grind through and get that important point.”
Junior Melisa Ates would put the Cougars up 2-0 by defeating Baylor’s Stephanie Adames in straight sets.
WSU would drop two straight singles matches to allow the Bears to even the score at 2-2.
Sato claimed her match over Baylor’s Kristina Sorokolet 6-4, 6-0 to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. Mylonas lost her match in three sets to allow the Bears to tie the score at 3-3.
It was all up to sophomore Michaela Bayerlova and she came through with a thrilling 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory to give the Cougars a 4-3 win.
WSU will head to West Lafayette, Indiana noon next Saturday to face Purdue.
