Amidst the crowd at the Moscow Farmer’s Market, one particular item draws both children and adults in, their eyes excited with wonder. This item is none other than a metal AT-AT Walker based on Star Wars movies that for some kids, is as tall as them.

Travis Teigen, a metalworker from Colton, Washington, has been selling his creations at the Moscow Farmer’s Market on and off for about five years. Around his booth, customers delight over TIE Fighters and X-wing Starfighters, as well as metal flowers and bugs, all made out of scrap metal.

“I use silverware, chains, bolts, nuts, anything metal I find laying around,” Teigen said.

In fact, one of his customers walked up to Teigen and offered to swing by at a later Farmer’s market with some scrap metal they had laying around. This is a fairly regular occurrence, he said.

Teigen has been welding for about 15 years and is self-taught.

“I work in a [fabrication] shop and grabbed a welder and just started playing with it in my spare time,” Teigen said.

While there were plenty of wares on display Saturday, even a metal banjo, the Star Wars items were undoubtedly the most popular.

The Walker is one of Teigen’s favorite and most time consuming creations to make. He not only makes Star Wars inspired figurines but also flowers, bugs and anything that sparks his imagination.

“It started with the X-wing Fighters. I was carrying around a pipe fitting for a while, and figured it would be a cool motor for an X-wing Fighter,” Teigen said. “Then it was just a matter of scaling everything else to that part.”

Teigen draws inspiration from beyond Star Wars, sometimes he will find a metal part and know exactly what he wants to do with it.

“I might see a picture of something and want to make it out of metal, or see something on Facebook and think ‘I can make it better,’” Teigen said. “It’s always a bit of a competition.”

The crowd at the farmer’s market is a friendly one, which is the best part, he said.

“I like seeing the looks on people’s faces, especially [for] the Walker. People are drawn to it. It’s a nostalgic part of childhood,” Teigen said. “Sometimes, I wish I could give my stuff away, because you see how much people like it.”
