Pullman first responders prepare for snow storm

City snow plow in use, residents to be cautious on roads

Pullman’s police and fire departments will prepare for a snow storm hitting the Palouse.

Dan Dornes, Pullman Police patrol sergeant, said this is nothing new.

“It happens every year,” Dornes said. “This is Pullman.”

He said there will be more calls from people who encounter collisions or get stuck due to the snow and ice.

Pullman Fire Chief Mike Heston said the collisions are usually low-speed and low-impact, so there are no major injuries they have to tend to.

Dornes said the city has people working the snow plow to make sure the roads are as safe as possible.

Heston said if there is enough snow and ice, it can impact power lines or even cause water pipes to freeze over.

He said he encourages people to take alternate routes when driving in the snow because of all the hills in Pullman.

Heston said drivers need to keep their car windows clear and have extra clothes or sleeping bags in case they get stuck. This is also to reduce the risk of encountering any danger.

“If you don’t need to be out, stay inside,” he said.

The fire trucks and ambulances will all have chains on their tires, Heston said, and he encourages residents to do the same with their vehicles.
