Man jailed for kicking cop

From Staff Reports

A man was arrested Saturday night after he kicked a police officer, Pullman Sgt. Sam Sorem said.

Nathan G. Nixon, 22, was charged with third-degree assault, a felony, and he was taken to the Whitman County Jail.

Police responded at about 11 p.m. to a report of an intoxicated male outside a residence on Northeast B Street. The reporting party was concerned about his welfare and said he had fallen several times.

Sorem said Nixon was escorted out of a nearby sorority after he made several people feel uncomfortable.

An officer contacted Nixon and determined he was belligerent and highly intoxicated. Sorem said the officer was preparing to leave when Nixon attempted to kick him.

“It wasn’t much, but he did kick him in the back of the leg,” Sorem said. “He did make contact.”

Nixon was initially taken to a holding cell at the Pullman PD headquarters. Sorem said is where police decided to transport him to the jail.

“He was acting just as weird and unpredictable here as he was at the scene,” he said. “So he fit the criteria.”

Sorem said Nixon will likely speak to a judge by phone to address his charge.
