Committee passes two bills to go to Senate

The ASWSU Rules Committee discussed a resolution at its meeting that would support a Washington bill holding WSU’s athletic department financially accountable.

Resolution 46-11, written by Sen. Austin Brown, would give ASWSU’s support to Bill 5109 in the Washington State Legislature. Bill 5109 would require the Washington Senate to approve the budget of any college with an athletic budget deficit for more than three consecutive calendar years.

Bill 5109 is co-sponsored by Sens. Michael Baumgartner and Andy Billig and was sent to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Labor and Sports on Jan. 12, according to the bill’s status page.

The ASWSU resolution supporting the bill was ultimately tabled during Monday’s committee meeting because the senators in attendance agreed it needed more research in order to go to the Senate floor.

“If you get burned on the senate floor, then you wasted the chance on a great resolution,” Sen. Josue Zuniga said.

Resolution 46-10, written by Sen. Kevin Schilling, acknowledges the deaths of the students on Highway 26. The resolution, which was passed during the committee meeting, calls for the improvement of Highway 26 to be added to the Cougar lobbying agenda.

The Senate also passed resolution 46-12, in support of the post-moratorium community action plan put in place by the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils.

The resolution highlights the student leadership that played a role in creating the action plan and reaffirms their efforts to change WSU’s Greek culture.

The two passed resolutions will go the Senate floor for discussion on Wednesday.
