WSU beats UW 2-0

From staff reports

The WSU soccer team triumphed over rival University of Washington in their final game of the 2016 season.

The Cougars recorded two goals against the Huskies while shutting them out.

It was the Cougars 13th consecutive win over the Huskies, following a victory in Seattle in 2015.

Senior midfield Kailiana Johnson’s rapid footwork kept defenders at bay, keeping the ball on the Husky’s end of the field, giving the Cougars several chances to score.

In the 18th minute of play sophomore forward Alysha Overland beat the goalkeeper one-on-one and sent the ball rolling into the goal from just outside of the box and putting the Cougars on the board 1-0.

The Cougars did not drop the pressure, and in the 39th minute senior forward Kaitlyn Johnson put the second and final ball in the back of the net for WSU. Both goals of the night were assisted by freshman forward Morgan Weaver.

Several goalie errors gave the Cougars multiple chances for a third goal in the second half, however Washington’s defense was quick to clear them out of the box before WSU could convert.

As the second half began to come to a close, the Huskies amped up their offense and put heavy pressure on Cougar defenders. Washington took multiple shots on goal but sophomore goalkeeper Ella Dederick was quick to shut them down.

The Cougars took over possession in the final minutes of the game and managed to keep the Huskies scoreless into the 90th minute. The game closed out at 2-0, the third conference victory for WSU this season.

The Cougars closed out its 2016 season with an overall record of (8-9-2).
