The WSU soccer team is set to face the Arizona State Sun Devils this Sunday on the Lower Soccer Field in Pullman. The Sunday game will follow a Thursday night match up against the University of Arizona Wildcats.

The Sun Devils will face both the University of Washington and WSU this week, starting with the Huskies on Thursday.

“We know what’s in front of us and we have plenty of room to move forward here and we’re confident that we’re going to get this thing rolling,” said Head Coach Todd Shulenberger.

ASU is coming off a 0-1 loss in Tempe, Arizona to the University of Colorado on Sunday. Buffalo freshman Taylor Kornieck converted on a free kick from the top of the box for Colorado in the 44th minute, securing a Sun Devil defeat.

The loss dropped ASU’s overall record to (5-4-2) and (0-2-1) in the conference. The Sun Devils closed out games at a draw with both the Utah Utes and Boston College earlier this season.

WSU will head into the weekend with a (0-3-0) Pac-12 record, and will have their sights set on their first conference win of the year.

The Cougars and the Sun Devils have both had high shooting seasons with struggles to get the ball in the net. WSU has taken 162 shots this year, and has scored 15 goals. ASU averages 17.2 shots per game, totaling 189 for the season. The Sun Devils have more recorded goals at 18.

“We’ve been playing really well but we just aren’t finishing our chances,” WSU sophomore defender Maegan O’Neill said. “I think that we’re mentally tougher and I also think it’s made us grow closer as a team.”

The leading scorers for each team are WSU freshman forward Morgan Weaver and ASU junior forward Jazmarie Mader. The forwards both have tallied seven goals so far this season, and also led their teams in shots taken.

Shulenberger credited his team’s defense with their ability to hold down the back line and make the Cougars a difficult team to score on. WSU has shut down 30 attempts on goal by opponents this season.

The Cougars and the Sun Devils will kick off at 11 a.m. on Sunday on the Lower Soccer Field. The game can be watched on the Pac-12 Network.
